Ways to Combat The Misery that Sometimes Accompanies Pain.

Those who know me well know I have spent most of March recovering from the most amazing (and extensive) spinal surgery. Once again, the Universe has been looking after me and although he would not characterise himself as a messenger from the angels, Dr Matthew Scott Young is the astonishingly skilful, brave and successful surgeon who completed the enormous job with no bad effects and total removal of my long term pain! Hooray!!

Given that I have had more than usual time to reflect, it will not surprise you that I have been planning the rest of the year, especially now that I have so many events to arrange, so much education and entertainment to deliver, and so many people to see right across the country.

On 15 May, which is a Sunday, I will be in Hobart where there are loads of women just eager to find out all about natural hormones and what they can do for them, whether they are menopausal or not. In June I will be running another seminar in Brisbane so that those of you who have missed it last year can catch up. There is not only hormone information, but also how you can get familiar with some of the surprising methods of new age healing that are available to you for yourself or for your family and friends. There has been a huge increase in interest in healing methods and at my seminars I introduce people to concepts
they may not have encountered before, but which are so-o-o interesting!

Time to recover from surgery also means time to reflect on how life changes, sometimes due to outside influences and sometimes…. because of decisions we make inside and skills we decide to enhance inside ourselves. What the heck is she on about now, you ask!

Well, I have been telling my friends, associates, and basically anyone who would listen, that there are forces afoot in the Universe that we can use to improve whatever situation we are placed in. So we reach for pain killers when the surgery makes it’s presence felt, but there is something else we can do. We can use energy healing on ourselves, and use our creative imagination to manifest a different reality.

For instance, today I had fair amount of pain in the morning, but since I am trying to get off the heavy pain killers from hospital, I decided to employ other things to help. So I used the ‘pencil of light’ that many of you will have heard me speak of. This is a technique I learned from a book by Robyn Welch called Conversations with the Body. You imagine a pencil of light, any colour, and sort of scribble on the part of your body that needs relief. It took quite a few minutes, and no doubt is not permanent, but there was distinct relief of the worst of the pain.

So how about the miseries that sometimes accompany painful conditions? Well, there are techniques for that too. All of these things will be included in my seminars as they offer real advantages to improve our health and well being, no matter what stage of life we are at.

So much of a bad day is due to multiple factors that come together. It’s not just the pain of the operation, is it? It’s the awkwardness of movement, the temporary isolation because of not going out and about, it’s the work not done but piling up, and the things we would like to be doing but seem never to get to! Pain killers won’t address most of these but the other techniques can and do help. The magic of life is how these things appear when you need them. Belief in your own ability to find what you need inside is all that is required.

So bring on the rest of the year! 2011 is going to be a hum-dinger,as my Dad used to say! The rest of this year will probably pass in a blur there’s so much going on, but I’m happy to say myself and the team are here to keep passing on the lesson that the natural world has treasures as yet unknown and the magic is there to be discovered by everyone who wants to!

Love, always

Suffering from Insomnia! February 2011

I wonder what would be the result if you took a poll of women over 45 to find out how many of them suffer from insomnia? Most of the women who come to me with menopausal symptoms would include insomnia on the list. But if you take a closer look at it, insomnia has many faces.

There are those who simply cannot get to sleep in the first place, plus those who wake during the night, sometimes several times. Then there are those who wake but cannot get back to sleep.

Sometimes the night sweat is what wakes a woman up, sometimes she just awakens and then experiences a hot flush. Some women have so much sweating they have to change their night clothes, or even the sheets. Life is a real misery but relief is at hand if they are suitable for oestrogen replacement. However, I use only natural oestrogen, not the synthetic variety.

The problem with insomnia is that it can stem from other sources, for which oestrogen is no help at all. Those who cannot fall asleep, no matter how exhausted, are usually quite stressed and their stress levels may or may not be related to their menopause. Giving those women sleeping tablets without addressing the main cause of their stress is pointless and will not help in the long term.

Those who wake and cannot get back to sleep are another category. Usually when we sleep we process the day’s events or week’s events and we find ways to file away the experiences for the future.

Sometimes the experiences themselves contain elements that we find hard to deal with and our unconscious, rather than processing them, wakes us up. Occasionally we hear of women waking, like children, with night terrors, or waking with some worry dominating their thoughts. Using sleeping tablets in these circumstances is not advisable as you are trying to force the unconscious back to sleep without dealing with the issues.

For many women in mid life, they come to realise that they have put up with, or settled for, a less than pefect life that has parts missing that they really need. None of us has a perfect life but we mostly are happy with what we have. If the Self has so far avoided telling you there are significant issues, then it is in mid life that these will surface, so that you have time to reappraise your life and decide what you need to change. This is why so many women get unsettled in midlife and start to re-invent themselves, with or without their current partner!

Because of my faith in our own body and soul’s ability to heal, I try not to intervene with medication if it’s not needed. Meditation, re-evaluating our lives and patterns, being grateful for what we do have may settle the anxious or depressed soul. But sometimes the currents run deep and are not immediately accessible via meditation or discussion. Sometimes the “stress chemistry” of the brain is so erratic and intrusive that long-standing patterns have to be altered and medication is needed.  Natural hormone balance can help with general moodiness and progesterone can be slightly sedating in many women. But progesterone alone is not sufficient to combat insomnia caused by sub clinical depression or overt anxiety.

My policy on medication for insomnia with anxiety or depression is primarily “Do no harm”, which largely rules out sleeping tablets as they are universally habit-forming, or worse, addictive. Getting patients off tablets in the benzodiazepine family (which includes almost all sleepers and sedatives) is a huge chore and takes months, if not years, to accomplish.

If there is a clinical depression present, it will often be disclosed by simple questionnaires giving a score, e.g. Beck questionnaire. Then an assessment of the presence and severity of the depression can be made and treated accordingly.

In the field of general psychiatry, acute and chronic depression form a significant part of practice. But usually in general family medical practice depression can be much milder and still disrupt the life of the patient, even if only via insomnia.

Low dose anti-depressants are useful in these patients as they are not addictive, do not accumulate in the blood, and contribute to changing the brain chemistry while giving a reasonable sleep. I tend to use the smallest dose that will relax the patient enough to let them sleep and that is often just a child’s dose used in an adult.

But if it is the hormones, then that can be managed. If there are less symptoms than would allow a diagnosis of frank anxiety or frank depression, it may be that there is simply the mental fragility that sometimes accompanies menopause. Any hormonally based upset is different in quality from other forms of emotional upset. The reason is that there is nothing fundamentally wrong with the woman, she is just roaring around with her hormones and her sensory system in overload!

Calming everyone else down is next to impossible unless she cracks a major crisis so they will all stop and listen! So the only other option for her is to calm herself down instead. I have extensive experience in using the imagination to create a safe place in the mind as a retreat from the world. Another option is to create, with the imagination, a bullet-proof shield to use in the immediate moment to protect against ‘bad vibes’ around you.

Have you ever been the subject of a curse or a spell?? I have, and until I took steps to deal with it, it was a very harrowing experience. There IS evil in the world and we need to take precautions so that we and our family and friends are protected from it. There are a number of books on the subject but as with most things, you have to avoid the charlatans. I recommend having a quiet word to the Universe as you stand in front of the bookshop shelves to make a choice, so that your choice is guided by the divine. (This worked a treat for me when I was studying law!)

Also it’s a good idea to “send in the troops” before you start delving into that area, i.e. ask for help and protection and you will get it. Even if you don’t believe in angels, they will still help!! So if you can’t sleep, practise being calm, breathing calmly, and if you have to resort to medication, make sure it is not just sleepers!

Happy New Year! January 2011

The New Year is here and running away fast already! I did not even have time to think about resolutions, much less to actually make them.

Breast Cancer And Hormones

I thought I would report on some of the findings of the Women’s Health Initiative study, that was drawn to a premature close in 2002 because of the risks of traditional HRT. There have been two studies since that time. One was a follow up of those women who chose to stop their HRT when the study was abandoned, and compared them to those who chose to continue the HRT because they felt they could not do without it.

Interestingly, those who stopped it had a very significantly reduced incidence of breast caner, compared to those who continued it. Now this may not sound like news, but it is very important for those of you who may have thought that taking the dreaded HRT would improve your “quality of life”, which is something that I hear a lot as a reason for continuing the tablets. If you take oestrogen for MORE THAN 5 Years after menopause starts, then you are at risk. This is why all of my patients have a note on their file of the year that they have to stop oestrogen.

The second study was just reported recently in the 2010 Journal of the American Medical Association.  It states that breast cancer mortality was “indeed higher” in women who have used combination HRT ( i.e. oestrogen and progestin, not progesterone). They have called for a study into the effects of progesterone with oestrogen on breast cancer, which has not been done to date. They suspect (as I do) that progesterone has a better outcome.

What Is Happening In 2011?

Well, The Book is being finished and should be available by mid year. Whoopee! We can then relax and get on with speaking around Australia. The end of 2010 was celebrated with a break away in the USA where I did some talking about hormones and then some skiing (Yeah!) in Vail, Colorado, which was magical. The snow was great and the fir trees looked just like every Christmas card I saw as a child.  For a week, I just read, slept and ate and the rest was fantastic. The shopping wasn’t bad either.

Vail Village Clock Tower with the snowy Gore Mountain Range in the backgroundThe other thing that will be happening in the next month or so, is the study I have made of my patients whose oestrogen levels was unexpectedly high, i.e. over 1000. Some of those were younger women, not yet menopausal but that is a very high level for a menopausal woman and it is suspected that allowing the level to remain high will increase the chances of cancer of the breast.

I have found an effective way to reduce your serum oestrogen….. stop eating CHICKEN!! I have even been in touch with the chicken manufacturers who had notices saying “Hormone Free chickens” at each outlet. When I said that I would like to get my patients to use their chicken when their hormones are too high, if the company is confident there are no hormones in their chicken. I got a call back saying they did not want to cooperate in a trial as they have “never said they were hormone free, only that they do not have added hormones”!!!!

So my research was correct! Chickens ARE full of hormones and the levels drop drastically when the patient stops eating chicken. It is pretty difficult to give hormones to deep sea fish, girls, so they have go to be a better bet.

If you are one of those people who has no taste for fish, can I recommend a good recipe? After all, poaching only works for salmon, and fried fish can be boring, but if you make a good sauce, fish becomes a delicacy.

My favourite sauce for any white fish is made with bacon bits, fried and removed from the pan, add mayonnaise, mustard, white wine, 1 cup of each, boil until reduced, then add back the bacon bits and pour over the fish! Voila! Scrumptious. And no oestrogen!

Information On Taking The Pill

Contracetive Pill

I know very few of you are still on The Pill, but you may have daughters for whom this next piece of information will be vital.

In the last 5 years I have found 10 girls pregnant while taking the Pill. Why? Because all of them were taking it in the mornings! Morning pill-taking also causes mid-cycle bleeds and all sorts of odd symptoms, whereas the girls who take their pill at night hardly ever need to see the doctor for complications. Why is this so?

Because when she gets up in the morning she has a shower, a coffee, gets dressed and goes to work or university of other chores and the pill which has been in her tummy is mixed with breakfast and the muscle activity required to get going in the morning means that the pill is less quickly absorbed. By the time it is absorbed later in the day, its effectiveness is reduced somewhat.

Try it for those girls who are having problems with their pill, get them to take it in the night time when they go to bed, it will be fully digested within 1-2 hours and they will relieve most of their problems! Voila again!

Manifesting, Channelling And Other Issues Of The Energy Universe.

As most of you know I am very interested in how we can utilise the energy forces of the Universe for our own highest good and that of those we love.  I already use some of the energy work when I am treating patients, even if some of them do not realise it!

Recently I had to counsel a woman whose life was falling apart, which she blamed on her menopause. In face the menopause served to heighten the problem but was not the root cause of it. She found herself facing divorce, abandonment by her children, and loss of her job and house all at the same time. And that was before the Queensland floods took away whatever hope she had of rebuilding her life with her meagre possessions.

She was so depressed and distracted by her terrible circumstances that I told her the only thing to do was surrender to the Universe and ask what she should do next. She was unwilling at first to make any effort herself as everything she “touched turned to dust”. But slowly I managed to get her to close her eyes and concentrate only on her breathing. She was way too stressed to try and count down into her ‘space’ the way I teach on the CDs “5 Minutes Peace” so I just let her breathe.

It gradually got quiet and the tears stopped and she was breathing shallowly. Then I told her to ask the Universe (she does not believe in a God) for help and to know what she should do next and wait for a reply.  There was no thunder clap, and I left her alone in the room for a few minutes.

When I got back, she told me she had ‘felt’ someone there for her, no words, no instructions, but at least a supportive presence. She was very much more settled by then and I asked her to repeat the effort at home again later. She did so and then reported to me that she had felt more positive, feeling that there was help at hand and she has been meditating every day since. After 2 weeks, her husband asked if they could give it another go with counselling, and she had been offered the downstairs apartment in her sister’s house!

Things are certainly looking up, and all because she asked for help. If this applies to you, then you too should go inside yourself, and ask for help. Help is available but you do have to ask.

So I am looking forward to February and to all the things that will be happening this year. I am hoping that your new year will be good also, and I commend to you the process of asking for help for anything that you are facing.

Merry Christmas! – December 2011

Christmas is over, the sales are on and I have hardly caught my breath after being away in the US for 3 weeks! How can it POSSIBLY be the end of the year already??!

Red CarMaura and Liz on Holiday Dec 2010We had the most marvelous time with our friends on the cruise to the Bahamas, even though the weather coming out of New York harbour was dreadful for 2 days and again for 2 days going back in! But we enjoyed yarning about things with old friends and new. Business was done, contacts made, plans revised for 2011, and altogether a good preparation for the work ahead. Then the snow in Vail, Colorado was fantastic! My son, Francois skied while I lazed (and shopped) and lazed again.

Here in sunny Queensland, the rain is beating down (we get most of our rain in the Summer, folks) while in Hobart they are on snow alert. Go figure. Problem is getting up on one’s hind legs to get going again now that I am back at work.

This year I will be working away on the book, and hopefully getting it to the publishers early in the New Year. Then I have to talk seriously to the women who missed my last half-day and 2-day seminars, and see if we can fit in another one before I go to Hobart in March. The webinars are a good idea in the meantime, but I feel the personal contact at a face-to-face seminar does make a difference. Let me know if you agree…

This month I am concerned about a couple of things of particular female interest.

The First Is A Bit Of A Shock, But You Need To Know

Unhappy CoupleIn the last 12 months I have seen around 4-5 women with outbreaks of genital herpes unexpectedly (i.e. they have not been playing around, but clearly someone has.) The sensation of herpes is one of PAIN, rather than itch like candida/thrush. Typically the first outbreak hits the hardest, with some of these women unable to walk straight because of the pain at the vulva. The lesions are very typical and the appearance alone is often enough to make the diagnosis, although I always send off a swab to be sure, to be sure.

It is essential that the woman gets on to an anti-viral such as Famvir or Valtrex ASAP to control the pain, the lesions and the infection from being transmitted to someone else.

I am always asked “How could this have happened?” The short answer is always “Through sexual intercourse”, even though there are loud protests that there has been no one other than the usual partner, for her.

I have even had men in the office with their distraught female partner, protesting that they have never had an outbreak and could NOT have been herpes positive. Alas, that is not quite correct. A person (especially a man) can be herpes positive, without ever having had an obvious outbreak, as their genitals are on the outside and the virus dies more easily on external genitalia, and if the man has been in good health and having good hygiene, he may have washed off enough virus to avoid having the outbreak, but his immune system is still affected and he still carries and sheds the virus!

Or, of course, he may be lying. It may have been so long since his original attack, or any attack, that he may have ‘forgotten’ it. The mark in the blood stays for life and there is evidence to suggest that the virus goes on being shed forever.

What is the difference between Herpes I and Herpes II? In the old days, long gone, when I was a young doctor, it was supposed that Herpes I was the typical cold sore herpes and only occurred on the lips. We all knew to avoid kissing someone with a cold sore, or avoid drinking from their cup or glass. And so it was thought that Herpes II was restricted to the genital form and was more virulent and had more side effects etc etc.

But then oral sex took over the world and suddenly we were getting Herpes I lesions in the vulva and Herpes II lesions on the mouth. So now it is impossible to tell without a swab and/or blood test what the infection status of any individual is.

What does this mean for my hormonal patients, or my menopausal patients?

It means a lot.

This is a time of life changes, both hormonal changes and lifestyle changes. This is a time when divorce is high, when finding another sexual partner may be high on a woman’s list of priorities, when she may need all the love she can find, wherever it is from. But she may be flirting with trouble if she does not have a set of STD checks, and insist the new man does also, prior to having unprotected sex. If he loves and respects you enough (as my Mum would say) he will do it.

If you have had the misfortune to have contracted herpes already, and very many women do (some of whom do not tell their partners, like men!) then it is recommended that you take anti-viral medication daily to stop the shedding of the virus and avoid any chance of passing it on to a person who is still herpes negative.

If the partner is also herpes positive (for either I or II, whichever is the infection we are dealing with) then there is no need for anti-virals as the other person is already infected and their immune system is already dealing with it, we hope.

This is a touchy subject but one which comes up often in the clinic and it is always distressing. It is far less distressing to ask him to have an STD check than it is to tell him you have contracted herpes, probably from him!

The Second Issue

The second problem is not strictly medical but causes a lot of distress, some of which boils over into clinic discussions. It is the subject of money. On every second show of Judge Judy some wench has given money to some ne’er-do-well who has either flown away with it, or who denies it was a loan, but says it was a gift. Women are far too generous for their own good.

I hear this a lot from distressed middle-aged women who should know better and who are therefore ashamed to take any public action to recover their funds. Relatives of the man involved are sometimes to blame, by inciting the man to consider it a gift from “that silly old cow”!!!@#$%$#@!

The scenario is typical. She has savings, he has none. He has a ‘pressing problem‘ which she wants to help him with. She hands over the money with the clear expectation that it will be returned, he uses it, then denies it was a loan, and she has no paper evidence of a loan.

The Moral Of The Story Is

Money never changes hands unless there is a paper to support the nature of the transaction.

It is either a loan or a gift, and the piece of paper should be signed while he is still in the mood to get the money from her i.e. not after the transaction!

Be warned girls. Get his viral status and his financial status straight before you give away your heart, body and bank balance!

Love and blessings to you all for 2011.

Almost the holidays…hooray! – November 2010

Now that we are in almost-holiday mode, I still have to give you some news titbits from the medical press…

ANTIBIOTICS IN GENERAL PRACTICE

For most of my medical life I have been cautious about giving people with a cold any antibiotics. It appears I may have been right all along. The BMJ (British Medical Journal) has published a study to how that organisms can get to be resistant after even one prescription of antibiotics! Previously we doctors were aware of antibiotic resistance but it was thought to be a community problem, rather than an individual patient problem. So watchout when you think you need antibiotics, think again!

HEALTH FOR MID-LIFERS AND SENIORS

As you all know, I am very interested in the preventative issues for our health at and after menopause. So I was surprised and delighted to find that the American Heart Association has praised Nintendo for their WiiFit etc games because they increase fitness and reduce obesity in a fun way. Gyms have become a necessary part of our community but they are inherently boring to ‘head types’ like me but having fun at home might be just the ticket!

MENOPAUSAL KIDNEYS

Those of you who have seen me at my clinic know that I always measure your hormones, but I also do some basic non-hormonal tests, which include kidney function tests. Now there is a study to show that kidney function tests are “independent predictors of mortality risk in the general population”. Wow! The tests assessed were eGFR (don’t ask me, too long to explain) and ACR (albumin to creatinine ratio). The eGFR should be over 60 and the ACR should be under 1.1. So get your own figures from the doctor.

NEWCASTLE MAGICAL MENOPAUSE

The seminar planning for Newcastle is complete and we are very excited to be doing the seminar down in NSW. There will be time for local doctors to come to find out more about natural hormone management as well as attend the seminar. Because we have found a reliable, easy way to manage hormones, it is time that the word went out for everyone to understand more about it. My friends in NSW have no idea what I am going to be like on stage! I ‘take the mickey’ out of everything and everyone and we all have a lot of fun. By the time I am finished with them, they will all be ready to ‘go natural’!

CUCKOOS INTO SWANS

– The Book! Well, I am well on the way now to getting the book published, I am guessing in time for Easter, so watch this space. It is a very good thing to sit, write, and detail one’s thoughts so that the result of so many years’ work can be readable and interesting to so many women. The numbers of menopausal women are increasing a the Baby-boomers get into their 50s. So there will be a huge demand for more information, as our generation does not take things lying down!!

Newcastle, here we come… – October 2010

I cannot believe October is on us and Christmas is around the corner. Things are moving almost too fast to keep up with! This month I have a few notes for you and some exciting news.

NEWCASTLE 6 NOVEMBER!!

Another seminar of Magical Menopause is being held in Newcastle NSW on 6 November.

For those of you in Queensland, you do realise that air travel is the cheapest form of travel at present, don’t you? So getting down to Newcastle is a real possibility for anyone who may have missed out in June on the Gold Coast. The region around Newcastle is very pretty and there are plenty of B&Bs, so if you want to catch more good news about menopause, get yourself south-bound that weekend!

Cloud worldAIR POLLUTION

We have always known that air pollution affects respiratory illnesses like asthma, bronchitis etc. But recent research shows that air pollution can also increase the incidence of other diseases. For instance, diabetes increases with the proportion of air pollution, as does the incidence of suicide! Who would have thought….!

And it is not just one study. Medical research workers in the US, Germany and Korea have come up with similar results.  And even Monash University have found that there is a clear increase in daily deaths (from all causes) with increased pollution!

This makes our pollution/carbon tax even more important than we may have thought. I don’t care about politics, but I do care about our planet.

SUGAR METABOLISM

Those of you who have heard me speak, either in one of the many seminars, or in the clinic, will know that I have a particular hang up about carbs and what they do to our metabolism in middle age! There is no doubt that you can get away with eating and drinking ‘stuff’ when you’re young that completely blow your metabolism to bits when you get a bit older.

Remember when you could drink 5-6 brandies at a party?
Or 10 beers (boys) and feel a bit tipsy, not roaring drunk fit to be tied down?!

That’s because Nature has an interest in managing anything you throw at Her while you’re still able to procreate and maintain the species. But once you have turned off the baby-making, there is no need for your poor liver, heart, adrenals, pancreas etc to bust their gut (so to speak) to correct your mistakes of diet.

Nature says: “If that’s the kind of rubbish you want to eat, then since you are no further use to your unborn children (cos there ain’t gonna be any) we are not going to help out more than the minimum.”

Therefore a huge, or even modest intake of carbs without protein and good fats to balance them, will induce a surge of insulin which in turn will plunge down your blood sugar, and will go on doing so, way beyond the level you started at! You feel it dropping, ‘cos that’s your control mechanism in alarm mode, and you reach for more carbs urgently to back up the sugar level. More carbs, more insulin, more sugar bouncing up and down!

And you wonder why you can’t lose weight??

Because the only immediate thing your poor body can do with all this sugar to store it, is to turn it into fat in case there’s a famine. And since there are precious little proteins coming in, the body is inclined to read the evidence as famine+++ and grab as much carb/sugar as it can and put it on your hips for use later.

Donuts

Since we will be dead before there’s another famine in the western developed world, we will all die with that fat on our hips unless we restrict our intake seriously.  But, you tell me, lots of people die thin, don’t they? Yes, because they have contracted some disease that eats up all their fat stores, or because they have become so demented that they are not eating anyway. Which goes to prove my theory.

Eat less, eat well, live longer!

MAKING PROGRESS TO YOUR SOUL’S PLACE

One of the amazing journeys I have been on recently, as part of my personal development program, has been to seek and find my “authentic self”. Now, I know that those of you who know me well, know that I already “tell it like it is”. But sometimes that’s just me being provocative and controversial, just so there’s something to talk about.

But being who you really are requires a thoughtful consideration of where you are this minute, emotionally speaking, and how you got here, and where to next. Not easy things to dash off in a moment in a newsletter, but worthy enough for me to ask each one of you to think:

  • Am I really living the way I want to right now?
  • Is there something standing in the way of me reaching to my top values as a person?
  • Can I get past whatever is tugging at me to hold back from living and loving fully?

When a middle-aged woman asks me to intervene in her hormones to put them into proper balance, I know that is usually only part of the story. The other parts are her general health issues and her place in the universe, as a spirit in human form.

This last area is not taught to us in school, or colleges, universities or even at our mother’s knee. Time has eroded the wisdom that women need to know and integrate so that they can reach the full potential of their life here on earth. Whether you believe in life after death or not, there is scant reason to waste this life and its gifts.  Finding your way to yourself is very worthwhile, for you can pass that knowledge on, and it is worth more than a king’s ransom.

Interrupting a tired and defeated life is easiest at the hormone level. When a woman finds that she is feeling better, more capable and more optimistic, she may be ready then to see if there really is more to life and living than she had felt to this point. Then she may be ready to find and feel the cobwebs of delight, see the moon rays of curiosity, seek the shadows of deep love, hear the sounds of simple laughter that are there for all but the way-too-busy to see, hear and feel.

The journey into tomorrow comes to us only one hour at a time, one day at a time, one lifetime at a time. Be sure you make the best you can of it. Your authentic self will rejoice in finding its own voice at last.

“The longest journey begins with a single step….”

Spring, Vitamin D & Queen Progesterone – September 2010

“Spring is sprung, the grass is grizz,

I wonder where the flowers is?”

or alternatively….

“Spring, and a young man’s fancy turns to –

What a girl’s been thinking about all Winter”

Spring FlowersWell Hello Again All You Happy Hormonals!

Just can’t help waxing slightly lyrical when the weather here is so glorious! September is the BEST month of the year here on the sunny Gold Coast. Not overly hot, not cold, no need for cover ups or stockings. Life looms ahead with sunlit BBQs in the evenings, not having to wait for the weekend. Ah, Yes!

So much is always happening around here that you won’t be surprised to find that we are busy, busy, busy. But we are also happy to report a couple of interesting items.

Those who look at my Facebook page from last night will know that I have been reading about the benefits of Vitamin D. We all know it is good for your bones, like the Queens of Hormones, progesterone, it helps keep your bones in good shape. What is becoming clear is that grandma’s advice about getting out into the fresh air and sunlight holds as good today as when she used to say it.

Vitamin D (Or Lack Of It) Has Been Implicated In Mental Deterioration & Parkinson’s Disease

That’s where there is severe trembling of the limbs and the muscles generally. Most patients when untreated are unable to walk properly or talk properly and soon lose the will to live such a restricted life. There have been amazing developments in the surgical field and you may have read about them. But it appears that good old Vitamin D can keep the monster of elderly “cognitive decline” (That’s “old and stupid” to you and me) at bay for many years. Now that’s gotta be good news!

The Study Also Suggests That Vitamin D Helps Recovery Of Brain Cells After Stroke

You know about stroke. That’s the ‘elephant in the room’ that all elderly people fear but never talk about. Mini-strokes are very common so anything that helps in returning the brain to good functioning is great news.

Get Your Vitamin D3 Levels Tested

And see if you can get drops to boost the levels to at least 50nmol/l (just remember 50) to get the benefit.

But don’t forget you can get a good dose of Vitamin D for free by doing 15 minutes gardening or walking in the sunlight for 15 minutes with your arms and legs showing. This is not enough to cause trouble with melanoma but is enough to boost your Vitamin D levels.

Reiki Group News

To all my Reiki healers, a special “Hi” today and to ask you to send one of our group all the energy you can spare. She is currently in hospital and unwell so even without me spelling out her name, please send her all the whole energy that you can remember to send, for as many minutes as you can. She has responded already to the healing we sent her the other night, so more will tip the balance even further in her favour.

Members Newsletter – August 2010

Hi Everyone

Grandmother GranddaughterThe numbers of members is growing and many women are joining us from different backgrounds, so welcome to you all!

This month we are doing the first of our FREE webinar series. This will be a mini-seminar on the web and all you need t do is go to the website, register and we will send you a link to activate when you want to join in on the day, which is next Tuesday evening, the 17th August. The other webinars in the series are also going to be Tuesday evenings. So watch this space.

I have been so busy with the developments that I cannot believe that August is here already and the 2-day event in September is nearly here too. So much to do, so little time! How often have we heard that, I wonder?

SERENITY AND ENCHANTMENT 3+4 SEPTEMBER – GIRL STUFF!

The first day of the 2-day event “Serenity and Enchantment” will be devoted to the Serenity part. What will it take to get and keep your hormones in check and balanced. What can I tell you that will help, even if your doctor doesn’t want to know! Then how about a little serenity around the daily stresses of life? That’s a good idea. At the Magical Menopause seminar in June on the Gold Coast I promised to tell you about the “No Libido Seduction”, and here it comes in September!

Make way for big waves of change, girls, things will never be the same again, I promise! Mother Daughter GranddaughterTell your partner you are re-inventing yourself and he/she will have to start over with love, sex and the whole nine yards!!

The second day will be all about The Enchantment. And how enchanting will that be! I am so excited to be able to take a proper amount of time to explain and demonstrate the things that will go to make the next period of your life the most enchanting of all. You probably thought that you were in your prime during your 20s or 30s. Well, I have news for you, it has only just started, kid!

The Philosophy of Mid Life is not just for the academic thinkers in high-born colleges like Oxford and Cambridge, Yale or Harvard. The Philosophy of Mid Life is yours for the asking, if you know where to look. Now that we are not all together in extended families (where you had to duck to avoid getting a regular blast of philosophy from the grandparents!) we have to look around a bit harder but there are pockets of wisdom all around us, if we just ask and keep looking.  The Day of Enchantment will reveal All, or at least enough to get you started, good and proper!

HORMONES AND CHICKENS!

Hormones And Chicken

You may have followed me on Facebook with all the chicken problems. I currently have dozens, yes DOZENs, of women with hormones being affected by the chicken they eat, even organic, free range and all the other ‘green’ ways to raise chickens. I have the details and have started a list of women whose results bear this out. It will hit the fan when it’s published and the chicken industry won’t like it but I can’t help that. If your oestrogen level is up around or above 1000 units, you HAVE to stop eating chicken for at least 4 weeks until it drops down again, and it will.

On the other hand if you have so little oestrogen that the lab can’t even get a reading, by all means eat whatever chicken you like, but get the level done again in 4 weeks to see if it has come up.

BOY STUFF!

All this goes to show that no one can guess their hormone levels. Even the guys. The men come in to me, often as a result of nagging by their wives, to see if they have normal hormone levels. Quite often, like about half the time, their testosterone levels are quite depleted and they have been breaking the bank buying Viagra when a solid dose of testosterone would do the job instead, and more naturally. More on that in September too, guys.

BOOK REVIEW

Matrix EnergeticsThis month I have had a whale of a time reading more about energy systems of healing.  The book this time is “Matrix Energetics” by Dr Richard Bartlett a chiropractor from the US. I also devoured his following book called “The Physics of Miracles”. These interesting books lay out another system for generating transformation in a body (or a situation) by the use of one’s hands and one’s imagination. The testimonials are impressive but the science behind it is more than impressive.

If we adopt his premise, then we can all target things to transform by the use of our energy fields, hands and consciousness.  I am looking forward to trying out what he says in the Matrix book as it is much simpler than the following book, but that may be because there was no such thing as quantum physics when I was in med school. It hadn’t been invented yet! In quantum theory, it has now been accepted and proved by strong scientific minds and means that the effect of the observer’s consciousness can and does affect the outcome of an experiment, even one designed to the strictest protocols.

This will not be news to anyone familiar with the history of ESP and the attempts to prove its existence to Sceptics associations.  ESP simple does not work when the ambient atmosphere is too sceptical, which is why the $1million prize for proving its existence has never been claimed. Now we know why! I have stopped bothering with trying to ‘convince’ people of the energy work I do, just because the returns for the effort are so little, when I can get on with doing it (very effectively, thank you) with other people!

Richard Bartlett’s system of Matrix Energetics differs from others, such as Quantum Touch, The Reconnection, etc, in that he uses science to go at least half way to explain why it works, and then helps the reader have confidence that you don’t really need to know how, just do it and it works if you can just get your own mind out of the way! Very attractive that! Good reading, but don’t bother with the “Physics of Miracles” unless you have a good grounding in science. There is a fair bit of web info on it too and of course there is the inevitable series of courses at different levels that require the spending of lots of money. But, to be fair, he does say that the courses are really not needed to do it effectively. Just that people love to see the maestro do it, I guess!

NEW WORKINGS OF THE MIND OF MAURA!

The other thing I have been up to is getting up to scratch with technology. I have been Facebooking (!) and YouTube-ing (!) and finding myself the bearer of techno info beyond my wildest dreams. I have a very sharp memory of having to learn to use a computer way back when I was a law student, and to learn it in a big hurry, too. I saw the ‘computer lab’ full of my co-students all beavering away on assignments that I also had to submit, so it was learn or drown.

To combat my fear of the whole techno revolution I looked around me. Some of those law students were banging away on keyboards like they were born to do it, but I knew they were not really that smart. So if they could do it, so could I.  And I feel a bit like that now too. If some people are getting info into the public domain and are doing it successfully, it cant be that hard!

I have a mission; to educate the Baby-Boomers, who are all 50+ now, to demand better mid life hormone care, and get it!

Here’s to all of us!! Hooray!!

Menopause Issues

After the half-day seminar I have had an influx of patients with the usual symptoms, like the Seven Dwarfs: Itchy, Bitchy, Sleepy, Sweaty, Bloated, Forgetful and Psycho! And they have all tried, or are trying to avoid, the dreaded HRT. So many women, so many symptoms, it’s a wonder the whole world doesn’t know about natural menopause by now.Blue Arrow
